I passed over this book several times because of publishers description. However nothing is as it seems and it is a complex mystery. Kudos for the author's bravery in delivering an unconventional plot which at first appears to teeter on the unsavory. (Again, appearances are deceiving.)My biggest disappointment was the sudden revelation of the villain. I would have liked a surreptitious hint at some point instead of a total surprise.
Overall I thought it was intriguing story.
"Kathryn Stafford abandoned Drew at the altar six years before and vanished in a cloud of mystery. She had hoped her feelings for him would fade, but when she comes face-to-face with the gorgeous new marquess, she discovers they have only deepened.
Drew is determined to keep his distance from the woman he believes to have been one of his father’s mistress. But every yearning glance and sizzling touch draws him closer to Kathryn…and to the scandalous secret that drove them apart. "
Didn't quite understand all the negative reviews about inaccuracies.
The storyline wasn't perfect and there were one or two glitches but some things labeled as inaccurate.... Well I wonder if the reviewers paid attention to details.

Once a Mistress (Audible Audio Edition) Debra Mullins Charlotte Wright Audible Studios Books Reviews
When Andrew Ramsey loses his father in a tragic accident, he discovers that his father has left very specific instructions as to how he is to care for his father's various mistresses and bastard children. One of these mistresses appears to be living on the estate, and intending to bring an end to this scandalous situation, Andrew hastens to the estate. Only to discover that the mistress in question is his former fiancée, who left him standing at the altar four years ago. And that she has a child who looks remarkably like him who is clearly recognized as his father's illegitimite son. Is it possible that his fiancée jilted him to become his father's mistress?
So begins Andrew's journey into a nightmarish past, that causes him to question the character of his father and the woman he himself had planned to marry. As incredible as it seems, Kathryn had borne a son and the father of that son was his own father! Any man would be angry to discover this situation, but how many would be angry that his father had not MARRIED her! After getting over his initial anger at Kathryn's faithlessness, Andrew wonders how his father could be so crude as to make her his mistress instead of his wife.
It is only a small step from there to realize that he still loves Kathryn and wants to be her husband and the father of her son, his half-brother. But there are still many unanswered questions. Why did she jilt him and then refuse to see him or explain why? Why did his father never tell him about her? Why does Kathryn--in spite of being a mother and a scandalous mistress--seem as innocent as ever in the lovemaking department? It is truly amazing that Andrew is willing to marry her without finding out all the answers to these questions first, or that Kathryn waits so long to tell him the truth.
Frankly, I devoured this book. I cried several times while reading this book. It's fantastic! I'd give it five stars, except that there were some flaws. For example, the assumption that the father's bastard child could be Andrew's heir. The father's willingness to subject Kathryn to scandal seems out of character. Kathryn insists that she can't bear any children for fear of an inherited disease and then she expresses the desire to have children with Andrew. But even though not all of the t's were crossed, this book is exceptional and I strongly recommend it.
I highly recommend this HEA romance! I loved the characters of Kathryn and Andrew - once about to be married until an awful event changed everything. The story of Wren and Drew is filled with love, humor, sadness, betrayal, but most of all enduring love. A must read!
Absolutely one of the best books I have read in a long time & that is certainly saying something special for I read a large number of books. Great storyline, great characters, even greater mystery.
You just had to enjoy this book from the first page to the last; it was a disappointment for the ending to come around. Read & enjoy a class act of storyline.
This story was a surprise. There is depth to the characters and the story. In this story, the English aristocracy condemned a young woman of unfairly jilting her fiancé at the altar. This is a good story and is not the traditional type of romance so many writers seem to create. Enjoy
i didn't think i was gonna like this book at 1st but ~~~ I LOVED THIS STORY ~~~ it threw curved balls ~ seems ~ that at first seemed unreal ~ but some how came ended up the making of a GREAT STORY ~ i recommend this book to all my reader friends. wonderfully written.
Upon Drew’s father’s death, he learns he has an illegitimate half brother and the boy’s mother is the woman who jilted him 6 years ago. There were secrets within secrets, interesting characters and a hero and heroine worth rooting for.
However, there were also typos and modern language. And I was confused about some of the characters’ logic and Kit’s status as heir presumptive.
Andrew (Drew) Ramsey, 16th marquess of Templeston never imagined that he would be thrust into his fathers title so soon. He also never expected to encounter the woman who broke his heart by leaving him standing at the altar six years ago. Fate has a strange sense of humor and he's not laughing.
Kathryn (Wren) Stafford has lived with a broken heart for six years. Only the kindness of the 15th marquess of Templeston, and his protection have helped her keep her sanity and her secret. Now, her world is crashing down and she can only hope she will survive her new reality.
I really liked Once a Mistress by Rebecca Hagan Lee. How the author started the story, even from the first page, was interesting and drew me into the books reality. The writing and dialogue were both very good, as was the character construction. This book was an emotional profile of grief and forgiveness, even in the face of lies, secrets and deceit. I only wish that there had been fewer sex scenes, which would have made this (for me) a 5.0 perfect read.
